Alexandra Danopoulos

Specialisation

Alexandra specialises in administrative law and environmental law in a broad sense, including: the Environment and Planning Act (spatial planning, environment, nitrogen, water), waste regulations including the EVOA, licensing procedures, and supervision and enforcement. Alexandra works in the Administrative Law department and advises and litigates on matters such as permits and enforcement procedures. Alexandra also specializes in energy law and advises on energy legislation and regulations.

What I do

Alexandra advises clients on enforcement issues and licensing procedures in various sectors, including storage and transport, industry, construction, and energy. She has extensive experience in advising and litigating for large companies in the field of environmental law, environmental law (including soil, external safety), general administrative law, and food law. She also advises parties on infrastructure projects and sustainable energy projects, for example on subsidy schemes such as the SDE++. Her particular focus is on supervision and enforcement issues (including administrative penalty orders), including visits and inspections (IL&T, DCMR, Labor Inspectorate, and NVWA) and permits. Alexandra has extensive experience in conducting proceedings in the field of both administrative law and civil law.

Background

Alexandra has been a lawyer since 2009 and has also worked as Senior Legal Counsel at a large dredging company, where she advised on various infrastructure projects. Prior to practicing law, she worked for six years as a university lecturer and PhD candidate in (European) administrative law at Erasmus University in Rotterdam. She obtained her PhD with a thesis entitled: “Dispute resolution by OPTA. An example for dispute resolution in administrative law?” The research focuses on regulation and enforcement by the ACM in the telecom and energy sectors.

Her experience outside the legal profession as a corporate lawyer has confirmed to Alexandra that clients need practical legal advice that can contribute to the solution of a legal problem. Alexandra has a pragmatic approach and likes to think proactively with her clients. Alexandra is also an assistant professor at Erasmus University, where she teaches courses such as Environmental Law in the Master's program in Public Law for Business and Citizens. In addition to her practice, Alexandra regularly teaches courses on various administrative and environmental law topics. She also publishes in these areas.

Examples recent work

  • Taking care of the procedure for obtaining an environmental permit and the conditions regarding the PGS15 for a short sea terminal in Rotterdam port (external safety).
  • Alexandra has successfully conducted a procedure on the Road Traffic Act 1994 in which the Administrative Law Division of the Council of State came tot the conclusion by decision of 4 March 2015 that the regulation in which the alcohol interlock program was included was not binding because it could have a disproportionate effect in a substantial number of cases.
  • Advising on European administrative law for the NextTrust Project, a project in the logistics sector with the aim of improving the cooperation on efficiency and sustainability.

The Netherlands Bar’s register of legal practice areas (rechtsgebiedenregister)

Alexandra Danopoulos has registered the following principal (and secondary) legal practice areas in the Netherlands Bar’s register of legal practice areas (rechtsgebiedenregister):

  • General practice (algemene praktijk), sub legal practice area administrative law (bestuursrecht), sub legal practice area civil right (burgerlijk recht); and
  • Environmental law (omgevingsrecht), sub legal practice area environmental law (milieurecht), sub legal practice area nature conservation law (natuurbeschermingsrecht), sub legal practice area spatial administrative law (ruimtelijk bestuursrecht), sub legal practice area water law (waterrecht)

Based on this registration, Alexandra Danopoulos is required to obtain ten training credits per calendar year in each registered principal legal practice area in accordance with the standards set by the Netherlands Bar.
