Multidisciplinary food team

Our food practice focuses on the many compliance issues surrounding the import, processing and marketing of food and animal feed. This includes but is not limited to topics such as pesticide residues, veterinary import controls, microbiology, contaminants and other safety and compliance risks. Our team has extensive experience assisting companies facing recalls or product liability claims filed by buyers or third parties. We are known for our unique expertise in food-related issues and supervision and enforcement by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) and other regulators active in the sector. We also have a team of experts who are fully versed in issues related to labeling, advertising and trademarks.

Ploum's multidisciplinary food team combines the above specialties with more generic legal services ranging from international trade (including customs law), litigation, banking and finance law and insurance to corporate, labor and administrative law, criminal law, IP, IT and, for example, privacy.

This all-round knowledge enables us to advise food and feed companies across the board and throughout the entire chain, from production and logistics to trade and retail. In addition to the often technical food and product regulations discussed earlier, we also advise on issues concerning the environment, residual flows, nitrogen problems, storage and transport of products and various (environmental) permit procedures.

In short, we approach legal issues surrounding food, animal feed and product safety from all legal angles.

Cooperation at home and abroad

Our specialists are closely involved with universities and various industry associations (NOFOTA, GAFTA, the Committee of Grain Traders, NZV, etc.) and regularly give lectures on developments and issues affecting the sector. Internationally, our practice is part of the Food Lawyers Network and the Greenlane network of firms specialising in international trade law including food law and customs law. This allows us to assist our clients quickly and effectively where necessary, both in other EU member states and beyond.
