Ploum advises Renewi on development of innovative bio-LNG plant

03 Jul '20

Ploum assisted Renewi in the development of an innovative bio-LNG installation. This is a unique, innovative project that contributes to the circular economy and the reduction of CO2 emissions. Renewi cooperates closely with Shell and Nordsol.

Renewi collects organic waste throughout the Netherlands from, among others, retail and catering companies, after which it is converted into biogas. Renewi will supply part of this gas to Nordsol for the production of bio-LNG. Renewi, Shell and Nordsol have concluded several agreements for the development of an innovative bio-LNG plant. The plant, which is expected to be operational by mid-2021, will convert gas from organic waste into fuels for long-distance transport. The fuels will be sold at various Shell service stations.

The complex, circular project required a unique combination of expertise, which Ploum, as a multi-service office, was well able to offer. A multidisciplinary team of Ploum attorneys and notaries worked closely together to draw up various contracts, establish the necessary business rights and advise on legal aspects related to, among others, the granting of permits, SHEQ, (sub)building rights, intellectual property and construction.

The Ploum team consisted largely of a new generation of associates and senior staff and thus proved to be a fine and successful result of the previously initiated strategy of growth, renewal and rejuvenation at Ploum.

"We were only able to do this because, in addition to our full service services, we have a combination of niche expertises in house that you don't see much of at other firms. We are proud that we were able to make a successful contribution to this innovative, circular project, which contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions."- Stephan Sluiter, partner at Ploum.

"Renewi and Ploum have been working together for some time. This project has further strengthened our good working relationship by providing sound but above all practical legal advice." - Tobias Oversteegen, legal counsel at Renewi.

The team at Ploum was led by Stephan Sluiter (environmental law and SHEQ) and further comprised Geert de Nijs (corporate law), Jacob Henriquez (construction law), Sabin Tigu (IP), Anton van den Heuvel and Jolande van Loon (real estate/notarial).
