Are your employees already AI literate?

10 Jun '25

Since 2 February 2025, all organisations developing or using AI systems must ensure that their employees are AI literate. Do you already comply? And what exactly does that mean?

AI Act

The obligation to ensure AI literacy comes from the AI Act. The AI Act came into force on 2 August 2024 and will take effect in stages in terms of obligations until August 2027. Since 2 February 2025, therefore, certain AI practices have been banned and organisations must ensure AI literacy within their organisation.

The AI Act provides a definition of AI literacy, namely: “skills, knowledge and understanding that allow providers, deployers and affected persons, taking into account their respective rights and obligations in the context of this Regulation, to make an informed deployment of AI systems, as well as to gain awareness about the opportunities and risks of AI and possible harm it can cause.”

Article 4 of the AI Act then requires providers and deployers to take measures to ensure, as far as possible, an adequate level of AI literacy among staff and other persons operating and using AI systems on their behalf.

AI literacy

The idea behind AI literacy is that all providers, deployers, and involved persons have the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions regarding the AI system. In this way, according to the AI Act, the greatest benefits can be gained from AI systems, while ensuring that fundamental rights, health, safety and democratic control are not compromised.

The adequate level of AI literacy should take into account the technical knowledge, experience, education and training of the personnel concerned and the context in which the AI systems concerned will be used. The persons or groups of persons in respect of whom the AI systems will be used must also be taken into account. In short: adequate AI literacy may vary by organisation, by department within the organisation and by AI system.
