Suzanne Poutsma

Specialisation

Suzanne advises and litigates for both Dutch and international clients on various commercial and contractual matters. She has extensive experience in litigating before government courts, but has also frequently acted as a lawyer and secretary in arbitration and binding advice proceedings. In that context, Suzanne has litigated before the NAI, UNUM, the SGOA, NOFOTA and SGR. She regularly litigates/arbitrates in high impact cases and has a focus on class action litigation.

Background

Suzanne graduated from Erasmus University Rotterdam in 2012. She holds a Masters’ degree in Dutch Private Law and followed a combined Criminal Law and Private Law Master with a focus on litigation. While obtaining her Masters’ degree, Suzanne worked as a clerk at the public prosecutor’s office in Rotterdam. After Suzanne graduated, she worked as a teacher in Dutch Private Law at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

From 2014 up to 2017, Suzanne worked as an attorney at law at the Litigation and Arbitration department of a major law firm in Rotterdam. During this period, Suzanne gained experience in complex, cross-border dispute resolution (both court litigation and arbitration). In the context hereof, Suzanne worked 6 months as an attorney at law in New York City.

In addition to her work as a lawyer, Suzanne regularly publishes and lectures, in particular on (the explanation of) commercial contracts, including distribution agreements and agency agreements, and procedural law in the broadest sense of the word. Suzanne is one of the regular annotators of the legal journal “Case law in the Netherlands” (Jurisprudentie in Nederland – JIN). Suzanne also regularly publishes about class actions. In addition, Suzanne is actively involved in the Dutch Arbitration Association, an organization that focuses on arbitration in the Netherlands as a method of dispute settlement.

In 2017, Suzanne successfully completed the Law Firm School. In 2021 Suzanne completed the postgraduate specialization course “National and International Contracting” of the Grotius Academy cum laude.

The Netherlands Bar’s register of legal practice areas (rechtsgebiedenregister)

Suzanne Poutsma has registered the following principal (and secondary) legal practice areas in the Netherlands Bar’s register of legal practice areas (rechtsgebiedenregister):

  • Civil procedural law (burgerlijk procesrecht), sub legal practice area arbitration, sub legal practice area attachment and execution law (beslag- en executierecht) and sub legal practice area ligitation;
  • ICT law; and
  • Law of obligations (verbintenissenrecht), sub legal practice area agency and distribution (agentuur en distributie).

Based on this registration, Suzanne Poutsma is required to obtain ten training credits per calendar year in each registered principal legal practice area in accordance with the standards set by the Netherlands Bar.
